2013 SCORE Baja 1000 Course Announced

SCORE announced yesterday the 2013 Baja 1000 course which will allow us to start planning for our four day adventure on the actual race course.  I'm personally really excited because the course is very similar to the 2003 Baja 1000, which was my first Baja race in my career. The course that SCORE has laid down will be tough. SCORE alternates between a peninsula race and a loop race each year; meaning every other year we finish in La Paz/Cabo or Ensenada. On the loop races which finish back in Ensanada the course is typically no more than 750 miles, while the peninsula runs are at or greater...

September Palm Springs to Las Vegas Trip Report

Oh boy. What a fun weekend! The weather was perfect, temperatures were in the high 80's, and we even had a little rain. We covered roughly 300 miles on dirt roads over the two days thanks to the group being so small. It never ceases to amaze me how much water changes the desert. Last month the area received some pretty heavy down pours. There were some pretty deep washouts out there, you really had to keep your eyes open and never let your guard down. Even wind changes the landscape drastically. I keep thinking about a particularly large sand dune we went around because the road was completely...

Como Chingas 2013 Rubicon Trip Report

I was lucky enough to be invited to join the Como Chingas 2013 Rubicon trip. Two days camping on the the Rubicon trail is what I call a vacation! There were five vehicles total: Three FJ's and two 4Runners. See below for my photos from the trip. Convoy from LA. Views from the 5 fwy. Discussing the map. Rubicon Trail is one never ending slab of granite and massive boulders. If you expect to get a break, this trail doesn't have any. With all the smoke from the nearby fires the sunset was unreal. Sunrise. The...

Palm Springs to Las Vegas Trip Report

Our first Palm Springs to Las Vegas is in the books! We aired down and hit dirt early Saturday morning. The route would take us from the Yucca forests behind Big Bear to the dry lakes of Baker and into Las Vegas. Total mileage was around 250 miles, and very little of it was on pavement. After crossing into Johnson Valley OHV area we found a small patch of sand and had a two-wheel drive hill climb challenge. After the challenge we had time to play around in four-wheel drive and see what our vehicles were really capable off. For lunch we stopped at the iconic Slash X Ranch Cafe. Slash X is an off-roader's...

FJ Summit 2013

The FJ Summit has been a seven year tradition in Ouray Colorado. This was my first time at the summit, but I can honestly say it wont be my last. The views are incredible and the trails are really challenging. The amount of FJ owners that showed up with their FJ's was astounding. I heard there were 300 FJ's and close to 600 people! The organizers claimed that it was the largest Toyota event in North America! In my opinion the best part about the event is it's a non profit event and all the proceeds go back to the local community.   Here's a gallery from our trip to the FJ Summit:

Baja March 2013

I just can't stay away from Baja, and it doesn't help that the weather this time of year is just about perfect! We had day time temps in the 80's, and the nights were in the 50's. We crossed over the border in Tecate, where we ran into a couple of friends of mine who were on a trip to the Pacific side to ride dirt bikes. They were going to stay at Mike's Sky Ranch nested up in the mountains, but we were heading to the beaches on the Sea of Cortez. I don't know about you, but I was ready for some warm weather. We stayed in San Felipe the first night in a beautiful custom home within a gated community,...

January 2013 Baja Adventure

Where do we start? Well, it all started with James when we were sitting around a camp fire in Anza Borrego for a weekend camping trip and he started asking me about Baja. He hadn’t been down in ten years or so and wanted to know which roads to take. I happened to have a Baja map in my FJ, so we started to look over it. It quickly became apparent that no paper map could show all the hidden roads of Baja. Fast forward a couple of months and we (James, Oscar, Josh, Dan, and Bobby) are crossing the border into Tecate on a three day adventure. Together with Oscar we hand picked a route that combined...
